We can rethink windows, doors, and car access.
The garage “carriage house” gate, illustrated on the left side, is particularly interesting to me because it has a door within a door. One door is for people, while the larger pair is for a carriage or now a car. All three doors are made of wood, detailed with spaces for air to circulate and draft at the top. Before electricity and roll-up garage door technology, this was a low-tech solution that integrated two functions in one masonry opening. The air circulation was most likely to ventilate the space for the horses that pulled the carriages. Form follows function and nets out with an aesthetic and lasting result.
